Tourism Mauritania

Mauritania
A Magical Country

eBiz Open Talk with Sid´Ahmed Mohamed, Minister of Tourism and Commerce of Mauritania

With a scientific background, the new Minister of Commerce and Tourism of Mauritania is set to give a push to the development of the  tourism sector in Mauritania.  "Mauritania has all it needs to become a tourism destination:white long beaches, breathtaking desert sceneries, impotent rock structures and a rich cultural heritage in the form of ancient cities that one day housed the camel caravans across the Sahara. But we need to build the infrastructure first and therefore our mission is to  attract foreign investors to develop our tourism sector.  We have a country to discover that is safe and politically stable and soon we will have a new investment code that will make investment in tourism very attractive to international firms

At the crossroads of North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, the great Atlantic maritime routes, between Europe, the Middle East, West Africa and the Americas and also the closest tropical destination to Europe, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania is considered to be an untapped tourism destination, rich in culture and breathtaking views.

Welcoming, warm, hospitable and marked by its ethnic diversity, Mauritania is also a crossroads rich in cultures and traditions and a succession of superb and varied landscapes, oscillating between coastal environment, mountainous relief, green valleys, desert plateaus and oasis.

With an area of 1,030,700 km2, Mauritania is one of the largest countries in the Arab world and the African continent and it is ranked 29th internationally. With a young population of more than four million inhabitants, the country has an exceptional potential in mineral, fishery, agricultural, pastoral, craft and tourist resources.
Mauritania benefits from a favorable climate for tourism (from October to April for “desert” destinations and all year round for the coast), a rich and diversified cultural heritage and an environment conducive to the development of eco-tourism and cultural tourism.
The country also has an exceptional and protected natural setting:
Banc d'Arguin National Park: Located along the Atlantic coast, this park is made up of sand dunes, marshy coastal areas, small islands and shallow coastal waters. The austerity of the desert and the biological richness of the marine area create an exceptionally contrasted land and sea landscape. A remarkable diversity of migratory birds spends the winter there. There are also several species of sea turtles, as well as dolphins, which fishermen use to lower schools of fish.
Diawling National Park: located in the southwest of Mauritania. It is a unique space where the conservation of the incredible diversity of landscapes, ecosystems and plant and animal species is in harmony with local development and the fight against poverty of the populations of the area.o

In addition, erected in the 11th and 12th centuries on the route of caravans crossing the Sahara, the cities of Chinguetti, Ouadane, Oualata and Tichitt previously considered as trading and religious centers, they have become centers of cultural and Islamic influence. It is for this reason that they were inscribed in 1996 on the Unesco World Heritage List. These historic cities bear witness to a traditional way of life, centered on the nomadic culture, of the populations of Western Sahara.

Chinguetti: In the desert of Mauritania, lies the historic town of Chinguetti, 85 kilometers from Atar. Surprising city founded in the year 660 of the Hegira (13th century AD), the city is famous in particular for its very particular architecture. It once played a very important role in cultural and religious education. Chinguetti housed many libraries, and was a meeting point for pilgrims. The importance of the city was such that it had given its name to the whole country. Indeed Mauritania had the name of "Biléd Chinguetti" (The country of Chinguetti). High place of Islam (7th holy city), the city is very religious. Planted in the heart of the old town, the famous Chinguetti mosque built in stone with its high minaret overlooks the roofs of the very modest town.

For a decade, Mauritanian authorities have organized the Festival of Ancient Cities annually to bring historic Mauritanian cities out of oblivion. This cultural event which starts each year on the feast day of the Prophet's birth aims to revive the Arab and African heritage of Mauritania but also to preserve, develop and make these historic cities poles of attraction.Nuevo párrafo
