“We aim to spread our risk insurance coverage to all sectors of Mauritanian economy”
The Mauritanian Insurance and Reinsurance Company (MAR S.A) was created on December 16, 2002. It belongs to one of the most powerful Mauritanian business groups with presence in all strategic sectors, notably finance led by one of the top Mauritanian banks, Banque pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (BCI) and chaired by Mr. Isselmou Tajedine.
With a capital of 30 million MRU and an additional self-funding of 80 million MAR has a simple objective “to cover the maximum risks insured in the Mauritanian market".
“The main challenges of the insurance sector are to reorganise the sector and force to implement the necessary laws to allow local insurance companies to cover a higher list of sectors”, explains Med Abdellahi Ould Braham, general director of MAR Assurances.
Nowadays MAR offers a complete list of insurances services for families, workers, employers, company owners, etc. covering all kind of risks (automobiles, travel, transportation of goods, fires and oil risks).
“As a reinsurance company MAR works closely with the powerful and enriched list of global reinsurance companies from Europe, Asia and Africa”, says Abdellahi.
MAR´s core business is the car insurance for fleets of company cars which grew from 45% at the beginning to 65% in 2019.
“We are very selective we our choice of partners eluding taxis and public transport services”, explains Abdellahi. “We collaborate with Africare, a non profit organization that works for the development in Africa and we are also associated to Travaux Routier de Mauritanie (TRM).
Some key insurance projects run their portfolio, as the Total´s drilling works in Mauritania, helped MAR gaining international confidence “This gave us the trust of investors to develop new projects in Mauritania”, says MAR assurances director.
